About the INJP

The INJP is a professional practitioner-led organisation supporting the development and representation of multi-agency neighbourhood justice case workers and managers.

It has been formed to work with the Privy Council Office to be able to move towards chartered status for its membership as well as providing immediate benefits to members of the Institution.

An application for a Royal Charter takes the form of a Petition to The Sovereign in Council.

Charters are granted very rarely these days, and a body applying for a Charter would normally be expected to meet a number of criteria. Each application is dealt with on its merits, but in the case of professional institutions the main criteria are:

The institution concerned should comprise members of a unique profession, and should have as members most of the eligible field for membership, without significant overlap with other bodies.

(b) corporate members of the institution should be qualified to at least first degree level in a relevant discipline;

(c) the institution should be financially sound and able to demonstrate a track record of achievement over a number of years;

(d) incorporation by Charter is a form of Government regulation as future amendments to the Charter and by-laws of the body require Privy Council (i.e. Government) approval. There therefore needs to be a convincing case that it would be in the public interest to regulate the body in this way;

(e) the institution is normally expected to be of substantial size (5,000 members or more).

Our Aims

- Professionalise multi-agency case working in neighbourhood justice.

- Champion victims and witness services

- Provide and develop relevant recognised UK based qualifications in the field of neighbourhood justice for both the civil and criminal justice proceedings to meet the application for the Royal Charter.

- Represent members in government consultations.

- Influence national policy and practice makers.

- Through Academy Programmes support the professional development of neighbourhood justice and community safety practitioners from all agencies and organisations.

- Promote joint case working amongst relevant agencies and networks in the UK and with other relevant international partners.

- Provide media briefings to represent the membership.

- Treat third and voluntary sector workers in this field as professional equals in neighbourhood justice case working and management.

- Manage and make available a register of competent and qualified neighbourhood justice case workers and managers for employers to access.

- Provide charitable educational bursaries and accredited training programmes.

- Work in collaboration with members of the Institute, educational providers, Government agencies, third sector bodies and approved private sector organisations for the pursuance of the aims of the Institute

The INJP Board of Trustees determines the overall strategic direction and development of the Institute through good governance and effective strategic planning.

The places on the Board of Trustees itself will be subject to National election.  However, an interim board will be appointed through consultation with membership to effect necessary planning and policy matters and to drive the move to chartered status forward until an AGM can be organised.

Members can put themselves forward as candidates for the interim arrangements and later the elected positions. All will be assessed against an agreed set of Board competences. Again an interim set have been proposed. Later any nominations may then go forward to a contested election, in which all Members have a vote.
