What is Neighbourhood Justice?

The Institute of Neighbourhood Justice Professionals have approved the following definition of neighbourhood justice:
Neighbourhood Justice
'Neighbourhood engagement that addresses the underlying causes of offending, provides opportunity, education and support for victims, witnesses, offenders and local residents, assists in preventing crime, helps to stop the 'revolving door' of crime and punishment, increase's the community’s involvement in the administration of justice and increase's access to justice'.
What is a neighbourhood Justice professional?
A Neighbourhood Justice Professional is any practitioner at any level working within the following fields:
- Law Enforcement
- Housing
- Transport
- Environmental
- Central Government
- Fire & Rescue
- Legal
- Health
- Drugs & Alcohol
- Children's & Families
- Education
- Anti-Social Behaviour
- Domestic Abuse
- Community Safety Partnerships
- Youth Offending
- Victim & Witnesses
- Restorative Justice
- Mediation
- Youth Diversion
- Road Safety
- Prisons
- Probation
- Courts and Tribunals
- Community Safety
- Crime prevention
Why is membership to the Institute free?
The Institute believes that all neighbourhood justice professionals should be able to belong to a professional body, which is not reliant on annual membership fees and is dedicated to supporting neighbourhood justice professionals.
What qualifications will the Institute support?
The Institute is currently considering endorsing relevant qualifications within the field of neighbourhood justice. When Chartered status is approved the Institute will work towards achieving its own accredited awarding body status.
